IEEE Photonics Italy Chapter has won a double Award 2018-07-25
We proudly announce that in this year 2018 our IEEE Photonics Italy Chapter has won a double Award:

The IEEE 2018 Chapter of the Year Award, for “…their innovative technical programming as well as for building an environment that reflects the rich diversity of the photonics community. From organizing the "1st International School on Nano-Tooling" and supporting governmental initiatives related to quantum technologies to continually holding Women in Photonics, Young Professionals and STEM Outreach programming, the Italy chapter consistently provides concrete educational opportunities for its members. This past year the chapter reached and positively impacted over 1,500 people with photonics in their region

The IEEE 2018 Senior Member Initiative Award, for “elevating 26 members to IEEE Senior Member and 6 members to IEEE Fellow. This was accomplished through regular elevation recruitment communications and meetings with the Chapter’s leadership committee and the IEEE Italy Section. The Italy chapter makes every effort to ensure different sectors are reached and are attentive to the varying needs of the photonics community. The chapter also takes pride that women make up 35% of their leadership committee, better than the Society average, which the Chapter believes contributes to the diverse make-up of their elevated members.

The Award Ceremony will take place at the IEEE Photonics Conference Award's Banquet in Reston, VA, USA ieee-ipc.org on October 1, 2018. More information can be found at www.photonicssociety.org

   Seminar 2018-07-16
Advances in Integrated Photonic Signal Processing
Speaker: Prof. Robert A. Minasian of School of Electrical and Information Engineering, University of Sydney, Australia

Location: Università degli Studi Roma Tre
Via Ostiense, 159 ROMA, 00154 Italy
Aula multimediale

Abstract: Photonic signal processing is attractive because it leverages the advantages of the optical domain to benefit from the wide bandwidth, low loss, and natural immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) that photonics offers. Recently there has been a strong drive to realise photonic integrated circuits using silicon photonics. Advances in integrated microwave photonic signal processing and sensing are presented. These include optical single sideband modulators, optical vector network analysers with high resolution, multi-function processors, and integrated photonic sensors using optical micro-ring resonators that demonstrate extremely high sensitivity. These microwave photonic processors provide new capabilities for the realisation of high-performance signal processing and sensing.

In the photo the past Chair Tiziana Tambosso is receiving the award by the President of the IEEE Photonics Society, Dalma Novak.

The Italy Chapter achieved this highest honor through the quality of programming, innovative membership development techniques, original workshops/conferences and community involvement. The chapter has 132 society members who help organize over 65 technical meetings a year and 5 major conferences, i.e. FONTONICA 2014, Mediterranean Photonics Conference, European Conference on Networks and Optical Communications, Bio-photonics Conference and international Workshop on Spatio-temporal Complexity in Optical Fibers.
The chapter also featured and supported progressive lectures on innovative topics, like “Fiber Based Platform for Biosensing”, “The Long March of Silicon Photonics”, “Evolution of Access and Transport Networks” and “Nano-motors and Sensors Realized with Plasmonic Particles”.

Best practices of the Italy Chapter when organizing major conferences are:
• Choosing cutting edge topics that don’t conflict with existing events.
• Budget attentively, targeting a 20% surplus.
• Vital collaborations with local institutions and adoption of an Executive Committee within the chapter that oversees the strategic direction of the chapter’s activities.
• Choosing attractive venues, but within a reasonable expense.
• Expand your reach in the community and design talks for multiple audiences, i.e. researchers, academics, manufactures, analysts and investors in the sector.
• Encourage participation of students; don’t be afraid to seek help from your constituents
